In this episode, Phil Boyte and guest Deborah Beagle, Director of Student Activities at Vernon Hills HS, Illinois, discuss school culture, leadership development, and the value of a supportive school community. Debbie shares her inspirational journey with breast cancer and how her school and network supported and encouraged her. Listen in to hear about her Hakuna Matata theme that helped her stay positive during her cancer journey and the encouragement she gives to have “no worries.”

A little about Deborah: 

Dr. Deborah (Selle) Beagle is the Director of Student Activities in District 128 at Vernon Hill High School and Executive Board member for the Illinois Director of Student Activities. She is married to Tim Beagle, Science Department Chair at McHenry High School and mother to Braiden, a freshman at the University of San Diego, and twin girls, Alison and Katelyn, juniors at Wilmot Union High School. Debbie is fighting Triple Negative Breast Cancer after being diagnosed June 2021. She enjoys collaborating and learning from others and sharing her experiences and knowledge with other educators and anyone fighting cancer. She is #BeagsStrong (her cancer-fighting slogan), and at the end of the day, she wishes for everyone to have no worries #HakunaMatata (theme for her cancer journey to stay positive).
